Bridging the Gaps: The Art of Scientific Writing Across Disciplines
One of the most rewarding aspects of my work as a scientific writer is the opportunity to explore new questions and dig deep into diverse research areas. Recently, I was asked by a client to write a review article addressing a novel question in consumer research. It was a fascinating project because it required me to bring together insights from various disciplines to create a new model for approaching consumer research. I love this kind of work—it’s like being a detective, piecing together clues from different fields to uncover a bigger picture.
What made this project particularly fun was the need to dive into a wide literature review spanning everything from neuroscience and psychology to food science, technology, and even marketing science. The consumer research world, especially in sensory and consumer products, is incredibly multidisciplinary, and being able to navigate through different academic areas is key to delivering meaningful insights.
In this case, I found myself going back to marketing theories from the 1960s and 1970s—a surprisingly rich source of inspiration! While the tools and technologies we use today in consumer research have evolved dramatically, these earlier ways of thinking still hold valuable lessons. It’s amazing how many of the challenges seen in marketing research decades ago mirror the issues we face in consumer research today. Understanding the history of these concepts can give us fresh perspectives on modern problems, and I thoroughly enjoyed uncovering these connections.
The Role of Scientific Writing in Solving Complex Problems
What sets my approach to scientific writing apart is the ability to draw from such a wide variety of sources. Neuroscience and psychology in consumer research are incredibly diverse fields, and relevant insights can come from unexpected places—whether it’s an engineering study on eye-tracking technology or a psychological theory about decision-making.
Being able to cut through the jargon and synthesize these insights into a cohesive story is one of the most important (and exciting!) parts of my work. I see it as my job to not only interpret and translate scientific concepts for my clients but to help them understand how these insights can be practically applied to solve their specific business challenges.
For example, in my recent work, I was tasked with developing a model for a new way of thinking about consumer behavior. To do this, I needed to read deeply into research that might seem niche or even unrelated at first glance—but once you start connecting the dots, these findings can offer profound insights. And the beauty of scientific writing is that it helps make these complex ideas accessible and actionable for teams who may not be familiar with the research itself but can benefit greatly from its application.
